Drawn from James Pradier’s Satyr and Bacchante (1834) in grey and white pencil, this drawing portrays a Satyr and a Bacchante, otherwise known as a maenad, in an entwined dance of ecstasy. The Satyr is symbolic of desire and temptation, of pleasure, madness, and wine. Maenads were often shown in states of ecstasy and restlessness, often written as ‘mad women’. The pre-Orphic Dionysus was the embodiment of all sexual excess, barbarism, and indulgence. 

This drawing is based on one of Jean Gautherin’s 1881-83 marble sculptures of the series Paradise Lost (or Paradis Perdu). This drawing was a study into negative space, with the empty space around the figures drawn first and detail added further inwards with gradual layers. An application of grey charcoal and white pencil was applied and blended directly on the paper to create the lifelike marble look, with highlights added over last.
